DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 900 AM MDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Aletta was located near latitude 16.4 North, longitude 113.1 West. Aletta is moving toward the west-northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h). A motion toward the northwest is expected for the remainder of today and tonight, followed by a gradual turn to the west by Sunday night and Monday.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 100 mph (155 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional rapid weakening is expected during the next several days, with Aletta expected to weaken to a tropical storm by Sunday morning and to degenerate to a remnant low by Tuesday.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km).
The estimated minimum central pressure is 973 mb (28.74 inches).
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Aletta will affect portions of the coast of west-central mainland Mexico and the west coast of Baja California Sur through the weekend. Swells are expected to build even higher along these areas early next week due to another weather system to the east of Aletta. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
