Discussion and outlook ---------------------- At 700 AM CHST...2100 UTC...the center of Typhoon Jelawat was located near latitude 15.7 degrees north and longitude 137.1 degrees east... moving east-northeast at 6 mph. Jelawat is expected to maintain a general east-northeastward track the next few days with only minor changes in forward speed.
Maximum sustained winds have increased slightly to 75 mph, making Jelawat a typhoon. Jelawat is expected to reach a peak intensity near 90 mph late tonight or early Saturday morning, then go into a weakening trend Saturday night and Sunday.
Typhoon force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 125 miles northeast of the center, and up to 90 miles elsewhere.
