DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 100 AM ChST...1500 UTC...the eye of Typhoon Lan was located near latitude 20.9 degrees North and longitude 130.3 degrees East. Lan is moving north at 8 mph. A slow turn to the northeast is expected the next few days, taking Lan east of Okinawa tonight, and near the main islands of Japan on Sunday.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to 115 mph. Intensification is expected through tonight, followed by a weakening trend Sunday and Monday.
Typhoon Lan has a large wind field, with typhoon force winds extending outward up to 105 miles northeast of the center and up to 80 miles northwest of the center. Tropical storm force winds extend up to 330 miles southeast of the center, and up to 260 miles northwest of the center.
