DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 700 AM ChST...2100 UTC...the center of Typhoon Lan was located near latitude 18.4 degrees North and longitude 129.9 degrees East. Lan is moving north at 12 mph.  A slow turn to the northeast is expected the next few days, taking Lan east of Okinawa Saturday night, and near the main islands of Japan Sunday.
Maximum sustained winds remain at 85 mph. Slow intensification is expected through Saturday, followed by a weakening trend on Sunday.
Typhoon Lan has a very large wind field, with typhoon force winds extending outward up to 140 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend up to 390 miles east and south of the center, and up to 250 miles northwest of the center.
