DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 7 AM ChST...2100 UTC...the center of Tropical Storm Lan was located near latitude 11.2 North and longitude 132.4 degrees East. Lan is moving slowly north-northeast at 5 mph, and is expected to turn to a north-northwest heading today through Friday at an increased forward speed. This track is taking Lan away from Yap and Palau.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to 70 mph. Lan will continue to intensify over the next few days, and should become a typhoon by this afternoon.
Tropical storm force winds extend up to 230 miles from the center in the southern semicircle and up to 150 miles from the center in the northern semicircle.
